Major General George W. Read

Commander, American II Corps

NameThe II Corps commander, he is described by one historian as "a handsome, tall cavalryman, who looked to one acquaintance as if he might have been a model for one of Frederick Remington's drawings of a frontier cavalry officer. " Much better as an administrator than a battlefield commander, Read took a backseat to the British, allowing British Fourth Army to take tactical control of the 27th and 30th Divisions during the Hindenburg Line and Selle Rivers attacks.
