General Sir Henry Rawlinson

Commander, British Fourth Army

General Sir Henry RawlinsonBritish Fourth Army commander, he ordered the inexperienced 27th and 30th Divisions to spearhead the 29 September 1918 attack on the Hindenburg Line, which resulted in heavy casualties. That morning Rawlinson recorded in his diary: "The Americans appear to be in a state of hopeless confusion and will not, I fear, be able to function as a corps."
