General John J. Pershing

Commander of AEF

General John J. PershingCommander of the AEF, he built a meager peace-time army into a fighting force that eventually grew to two million doughboys. Prior to lending the 27th and 30th Divisions to the British, Pershing was heavily criticized for insisting upon an independent army. One British staff officer referred to him as "the stupidest man in France, showing quite remarkable narrow-mindedness and obstinacy."
