Major General John F. O'Ryan

Commander 27th Division

NameCommander of 27th Division, O'Ryan had the distinction of being the only National Guard general to remain in command of his division throughout the war. Although he never served in the Regulars, O'Ryan attended the Army War College and published the influential The Modern Army in Action. One AEF officer described him as a "trim, well-proportioned athletic man, who was supple, springy, and energetic in his movement, punctiliously neat, and up to the mark in his dress and personal appearance."
