Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig
Commander of BEF
Commander of the BEF on the Western Front, Haig clashed with Pershing regarding the amalgamation of American troops with his own forces in Belgium and France. Eventually the two commanders compromised and the 27th and 30th Divisions remained with Haig's army through the armistice. Haig honored the doughboys by telling them they had "earned the lasting esteem and admiration of your British comrades in arms, whose success you have nobly shared"
